The Canadian Work Permit 

Many of our clients wish to work in Canada, whether with an eye towards permanent relocation, or for a limited period of time. This article explains the most basic eligibility requirements for a Canadian work permit. It will give you a good indication of where you stand. If you notice that you do not meet one of the requirements below, it’s not the end of the world. You will have a better idea of what you should work on before you submit your application – thereby saving time, money, and effort.

Plan to Leave

Your job is to convince immigration officers that you will leave Canada before your work permit expires, by providing evidence of your center of life being in your home country.  So you can, for example, provide proof of your family relationships, properties, memberships, etc. It might be helpful to purchase a flexible return ticket.

Have enough Money

You should have enough money to support yourself when you are living in Canada. It will be your job to prove this. How much money is ‘enough money’? There is no fixed amount because every case is different. Just know that you should prove that you have enough money to cover your basic needs and costs. Of course, remember to set aside money to purchase your return ticket (if you haven’t already purchased it).

Be prepared to provide evidence. For example, letters and statements from financial institutions where your accounts are held. If you don’t have a large account balance, again, it’s not the end of the world. There are other ways to prove that you will be financially cared for.

Follow the Rules

Immigration officers want to be sure that you will obey Canada’s laws and that you don’t pose a risk to Canadian security. This means, having a criminal record could have a detrimental effect on your applicationת and you will be required to provide a police clearance certificate.

Another element to keep in mind is your health. You must be in good health to be eligible for a Canadian work permit. In fact, work permit applicants living in certain countries might have to take a medical examination. This requirement does not usually apply to individuals living in Israel. 

Avoid Certain Employers

Before agreeing to work for someone, make sure that employer is even allowed to hire you. There are certain employers whose permission to hire foreign workers has been revoked. If you come to an employment agreement with any of them, your work permit application will be rejected. You can find a list of these employers on the Government of Canada website. Also on the Government of Canada site, is a list of employers who are temporarily banned from hiring foreign workers.

Employers which provide mainly erotic services could also cause your application to be rejected. They offer striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages. If you apply to work for such an employer, your Canadian work permit application will be denied.

Prepare your Documents

Immigration officers may request documents from you. Your duty is to provide them. A well prepared Canadian work permit application package can make all the difference in the world. Your application should include all necessary documents and more. Missing items can cause unnecessary delays and costs.

Immigration officers evaluate your application to determine whether or not you should be allowed to enter Canada. It is your job to convince them that you should. This means that your application package should not be missing any documents. It should include all the evidence needed to support your request. It should be flawless.
